Kidney Stones Treatment in Leeds

Kidney Stone Specialist Leeds

Private Kidney Stone Treatment in Leeds

Kidney stones are a common urological condition and can cause severe pain, urinary symptoms, recurrent infections, and, in some cases, damage to the kidney. At Urology Care, Mr Grigorios Kyriazis offers expert assessment and treatment for patients with kidney stones at Spire Leeds Hospital and Spire Methley Park Hospital.

Mr Kyriazis is a Consultant Urological Surgeon with extensive experience in the management of kidney stone disease, including minimally invasive and robotic techniques.

What are kidney stones?

Kidney stones are hard deposits that form within the kidneys from minerals and salts present in the urine. Stones can vary considerably in size, ranging from tiny crystals to larger stones that may obstruct the urinary tract.

Common types of kidney stones include:

  • Calcium stones
  • Uric acid stones
  • Infection (struvite) stones
  • Cystine stones

What symptoms can kidney stones cause?

Symptoms may include:

  • Severe pain in the back or side (renal colic)
  • Pain radiating to the groin or testicle
  • Blood in the urine (haematuria)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Burning or discomfort on passing urine
  • Frequent urination
  • Fever and chills (which may indicate infection and require urgent medical attention)

Some kidney stones cause no symptoms and are discovered incidentally during imaging.

When should I see a specialist?

You should seek specialist assessment if you experience:

  • Recurrent kidney stones
  • Persistent pain
  • Blood in the urine
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
  • A known kidney stone requiring monitoring
  • A family history of stone disease
  • Concerns regarding prevention of future stones

How are kidney stones diagnosed?

Assessment may include:

  • Detailed medical history and examination
  • Urine testing
  • Blood tests
  • Ultrasound scan
  • CT scan of the kidneys, ureters and bladder (CT KUB)

These investigations help determine the size, location and composition of the stone and guide treatment.

Treatment options

Treatment depends on the size and location of the stone, the severity of symptoms, and the patient's overall health.

Many small stones pass spontaneously with conservative treatment.

For larger or symptomatic stones, treatment options include:

Flexible Ureteroscopy and Laser Stone Treatment

A minimally invasive procedure performed using a fine telescope passed through the urinary tract to fragment and remove stones using laser technology.

Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL)

Shockwaves are used externally to break stones into smaller fragments that can be passed naturally.

Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL)

A keyhole procedure used for larger or complex kidney stones.

Robotic Surgery

In selected complex cases, robotic surgery may be recommended.

Preventing future stones

Patients with recurrent stone disease may benefit from metabolic assessment and dietary advice to reduce the risk of future stone formation.

Recommendations may include:

  • Increasing fluid intake
  • Dietary modification
  • Weight management
  • Specific medications where appropriate
